Big Blue Chair

The vacant space opposite CU Boulder's Environmental Design building presents an opportunity for redesign. The Big Blue Chair proposal aims to introduce a sculpture that not only adds aesthetic value but also invites meaning, inspiration, and functionality to the location.

This type of chair serves as an archetype for generations of students who have spent countless hours studying and working in school environments. Despite the challenges many have faced while seated in similar chairs during elementary and middle school, education serves as a powerful reminder of our collective choice to return and continue learning. By scaling up this familiar concept and focusing its application, we hope to symbolize the ongoing journey of education at CU Boulder—a journey characterized by growth, perseverance, and the pursuit of knowledge.

As young children, many of us started our educational journey seated in small plastic chairs. Despite growing older and moving on to different chairs, we often find ourselves in a similar position, facing new challenges and responsibilities. However, at the collegiate level, the demands and commitment required to occupy that chair become significantly greater
